What flies and techniques? 2008/06/02 06:24
Just checked with Jamie that tomorrow afternoon 4-8pm is fine to wet a line. So what fly is catching, where in the lake and at what depth are the fish? Obviously these are all questions I will be asking Jamie when I get there but interested to hear from anyone who has visited the lake recently.

Hi Mate ,

I was on the lake yesterday , the fishing was quite hard with not many fish being taken. I had 2 Rainbows one on a Black /Red Bzzer the other on a Pheasnt Tail Nymph ( Both Size 12 ).The lake is going through an Algae Bloom at the moment if you look into the water you will see thousands of tiny particles which are forming a layer in the top section of the water , so ideally i would try using an Intermediate Line and let it sink down below the Algae. You will notice that there are not as many fish coming up to the surface to feed because of this , one thing to bare in mind is that they still need to feed . Let me know how you get on ..

Regards

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a tough afternoon could be on the cards. Not that I mind, as just getting out with a fly rod at Garnffrwd does it for me,regardless of whether I catch or not. Buzzers are normally my favoured choice and maybe if I ask Jamie nicely he might allow me to put a dropper on with a buzzer and maybe a weighted nymph on the point to get the leader down below the bloom. If not I'll put the intermediate on and try it that way.

Hi Fishpimp1,

As you mentioned there was algal bloom. Fished from 4.30pm - 8.30pm C&R. Started off using the floating line with a goldbeaded damselfly nymph as there were loads of adults flying around. Got the odd knock and a lovely 2.5lb fish with a spade like tail. Gave a really good account of itself. Had a few follows that turned away at the surface when they saw me. After a while I tried the intermediate to use an unweighted fly. First cast on a mayfly nymph and it was hit hard, by the time I realised it was a big fish, it had straightened my hook and was off. Tried buzzers but no interest. Back on went the damselnymph this time without a goldbead and I had a nip at the tail followed by a 2lb fish on the next cast. The last 40 mins went quiet with little to no movement of fish anywhere. Another great session though at Garnffrwd.

Losing the big one was the last straw for my Sharpes Gordon Rod as it's beautiful to cast but stiff for playijg fish. I therefore tend to lose a few and can't help thinking that if I had been using my Diamondback rod the hook probably wouldn't have straightened.

Cheers
