Enjoyable fishing 2008/05/07 06:46
Spent the afternoon yesterday fishing Garnffrwd. Great day and as usual great advice received re: whats catching and where etc. After hearing that bowns had been spotted round to the cleared pathway on the right I headed off there to see what I could tempt. Buzzers were being taken apparently so on went a green epoxy buzzer on a floating line. As predicted the fish were about four feet or more down but were willing to rise up when the spotted something depsite the bright sun. Four casts in and the line moved. Five minutes later a beutiful brownie of about 2.5lb was caught and release. Sorry, no photos. An hour in no more takes so after a quick sandwich I tried the far side of the island. The fish were rising everywhere but I couldn't make out what was hatching (poor entomologist). It was a beige coluored fluttery fly and they were taking them just as the broke through the surface. varoius patterns produced nothing depsite all the frenzied feeding. On went a GRHE suspender buzzer and immediately a take. A five minute fisght and as he approached the net he lunged for the platform I ws on. I couldn't get him out and he threw the fly after taking me around a support. He was a rainbow of about 2lb. Another take was missed later as my mobile phone rang and I answered it so as not to disturb the peace around the lake (must remember to switch it off next time). No further takes although my dad missed two takes late on to a dry fly he was fishing.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Credit to Jamie and his assistants for the work done on the pathway, the daily work of running the fishery which have helped produce the fantastic fishery and fish on offer to us. I wish I could get there daily but at the moment I have to make do with as and when a young family allows and relive my moments in between in my head and by writing this.

Hi Mate .

I have been on the lake all day . Finished on a total of 14 fish . 13 Rainbows + 1 Brown , all taken off platform 14. The Brown was around the 2lb mark beautiful condition , the Rainbows were all around 2-21/2lb. All were taken on a size 16 Buzzer which they were hitting hard . I couldn't agree with you more Jamie keeps the lake in tip top condition . Anyway catch down there one day

Hi Fishpimp1,

I was wondering, probably because of your username, whether you were fishing them under an indicator?

Hi There

I do use the indicator most of the time but yesterday i found it easier without it , the fish seemed to be taking at a variety of depths so rather than stopping and changing the depths i decided to count the buzzer down instead . I was using an 8ft6 four weight so you can imagine it was great sport.Normally with buzzer fishing you watch the end of your line for the twitch but they were just really yanking the line line good and hard. Buzzer fishing is really addictive once you get into it.

Regards

So an ultra slow retrieve on a longish leader? What colour and type of buzzer do you find most effective at Garnffrwd? I tend to use an olive or black epoxy buzzer to good effect.

Hi Mate

I have found that Black with either a silver or Gold Rib tends to work very well , most of my buzzers are tied on Kamsan B110 Hooks they are weighted with the curved shank ,very strong so there is no fear of them straightning. They are tied with just Black tying thread and a fine wire for the rib , then completely varnished .
Fished either under an indicator or a very slow figure of eight retrieve they are deadly and the fish take them very confidently . I have had fish up to 25lbs on them ( Ravensnest in Monmouthshire )and the take was the slightest of takes no indication of the size of fish that had taken it. Give them a go , I am not a great fly tyer but these are easy to tie . Check out Diptera.co.uk it's a fly tying site which will give you step by step tying instructions .

Regards
