Giday 2008/01/06 16:59
Hi to everyone at Garnffrwd....just found the new web-site and the place still looks as good as it always did. Before I moved to New Zealand I used to fish at Garnffrwd at least once a week and it is without a doubt one of the best small still-water trout fisheries in the UK.It's a totally different trout fishing experience out here but there are fantastic fly-fishing opportunities in stunning scenery and at a very reasonable cost.....if you don't take into account the air-fare

Regards Mike

Welcome to the Garnffrwd fishing community, Mike. Glad you have found us! I am sure we are all pretty envious of you in NZ with all that fabulous trout fishing available to you. If you're ever back in Wales please come and visit us and have a cast.

Yeah...I am very lucky. We live on the Kapiti Coast which is only a couple of hours drive from the mighty Tongariro river which has some of the best wild rainbow trout and on occasions double figure brown trout fishing in the world. We have friends who have access to a "bach" pronounced batch {holiday home } in Turangi the self styled "trout fishing capital of the world" and we quite often go up for long weekends. It's literally two minutes walk to some of finest pools and glides on the Tongariro. Totally different techniques to UK still-waters are needed because the fish tend to feed hard on the bottom so we use 8 or 9wt gear with a really heavy bomb type nymph with a lighter pattern tied New Zealand style on a dropper attached to the bend of the bomb.On the Tongariro you are only allowed to fish with yarn indicators which are a bit like casting a small bush...but when you do hook up wow! the combination of fast flowing water and exceptionally strong wild fish make for some memorable action. The Taupo fishery which includes the Tongariro has a separate permit to the rest of NZ and this only costs 85 NZ dollars a year {33 pounds} which is another reason it is so popular with over-seas anglers especially the Americans but even at the peak times you can always find somewhere to fish....yeah I'm very very lucky.

Mike.
